Operating a fire apparatus and managing a fire pump are critical responsibilities that demand precision, judgment, and advanced technical training. The NFPA 1002 Driver/Operator & Pump Operator Training Program at Canadian Fire Rescue College is designed to prepare firefighters to safely and effectively operate pumping apparatus in emergency and non-emergency conditions.
This industry-aligned program provides NFPA 1002–compliant Driver/Operator and Pump Operator training, equipping students with the knowledge and practical skills required to operate fire department vehicles, manage water supply systems, and perform pumping operations under real-world fireground conditions. Training emphasizes apparatus safety, mechanical awareness, hydraulics, pump theory, and operational decision-making.
Delivered through a blended learning model, the program combines online theory with intensive on-campus practical training at our Red Deer County, Alberta campus. Students progress from foundational concepts to hands-on application, developing confidence and operational competence in apparatus driving and pump operations.
The Driver/Operator & Pump Operator program is suitable for currently serving firefighters seeking certification, as well as individuals looking to strengthen their qualifications in preparation for career firefighter recruitment. Graduates leave with training that supports department readiness, professional advancement, and safe emergency operations.
