The Canadian Fire Rescue College is in the process of becoming a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and if successful, ational applications for the Firefighter I&II program. This page is dedicated to informing international students about special considerations they should take prior to, and during their enrollment.
The Canadian Fire Rescue College requires that all international students submit proof of valid health insurance for the duration of their training program. Students may be eligible to apply for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Program (AHCIP). If not eligible for AHCIP, students must purchase adequate insurance coverage privately.
If your credentials (such as high school diploma or GED) are in a language other than english, you will be required to take additional language proficiency testing through TOEFL or IELTS. This testing is required to ensure you will be successful in our training programs. To learn more about the CFRC English Language Proficiency requirements, visit our Registration and Admission Policy.
International student pre-requisites (such as high school diploma or GED) must be assessed by the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) who will perform an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA). This assessment is done to ensure your credentials are equal to their Canadian counterpart. There is a fee for this service, and after completion applicants are issued a report that is valid for 5 years.
International students will need to arrange for travel to the campus. This can be via car, bus, rideshare, taxi, or a combination of these and aircraft.
International students who successfully complete training at the Canadian Fire Rescue College are NOT eligible for Post Graduate Work Permits (PGWP).
The town of Onoway is located nearby the College campus, and offers mental health, and physical health services through an Alberta Health Services clinic. Click the button below to learn more about the services available nearby.
International students are housed at one of two fire-stations during their educational program. The stations are equipped with twin sized beds, full kitchens, laundry facilities, and dishware/cutlery. Meals are NOT included with tuition.
Students who do not wish to stay on station are encouraged to find rental housing elsewhere using websites such as AriBnB or arrange for housing at the Alberta Beach Inn and Suites.
We provide students with the opportunity to work with some of Canada's best firefighter job-placement and preparation personnel. From prepping for phycial aptitude testing, to interview practice; we have individuals that can help you acheive your goals.
The Canadian Fire Rescue College cannot provide immigration advice (or advice on student visas, work permits, etc.). International students are referred to immigration consultants or immigration lawyers.
