Do you like hanging out with sick or injured people for hours and hours and hours on end? If so, this is the course for you! All jokes aside, this program is designed to prepare professionals in emergency medical care who may be responsible for initial assessments, the provision of safe and prudent care, and the transport of a patient to the most appropriate healthcare facility.
The Canadian Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Training Program offered by the Canadian Fire Rescue College is the only program currently offered by the college that is not delivered in a blended delivery format. The entire course is delivered in-person at the Alberta Beach Fire Station, and there is very little pre-reading required leading up to the course. Students get the opportunity to sign up with the local Fire Department, and put their skills to use while they undergo their formal training.
The EMR Training Program can be taken by individuals who are currently employed as firefighters, by firefighters looking to receive a promotion or transfer, or by individuals looking to add to their resume so they can apply for career firefighter positions. This program can also be taken by non-firefighters who are interested in pursing a career in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) field, or by individuals seeking to further their education by meeting pre-study requirements of more advanced paramedicine programs.

The CFRC has a pretty comprehensive admissions policy which students should review before applying. The highlights of the requirements for this program are:
The Emergency Medical Responder program is delivered in an in-class format, meaning that the entirety of the program is delivered in person. The course includes the Basic Life Support (BLS) training as well.

Successful graduates of the program will be eligible to apply for and participate in the Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators (COPR) entry to practice examination if they choose. The COPR entry to practice examination is the universal examination process applicable to Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
For further information regarding the COPR, visit www.copr.ca
This Emergency Medical Responder training program provides graduates with EMR and BLS certifications necessary to apply for certain Primary Care Paramedic programs at other institutions. Graduates may also pursue provincial paramedic licensing through the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics which would allow them to seek employment in the Emergency Medical Services profession and firefighting industry. These qualifications may be required for certain emergency response personnel in municipal settings (such as for Edmonton and Calgary Fire), and may also be required for certain industrial firefighter job postings. Some departments require this training before a firefighter may be eligible for further promotion.
This program is not yet licensed through Alberta Advanced Education and thus is not open for public enrollment. All applicants must be currently employed with an emergency services related organization before admission will be permitted. If you are between positions and are interested in taking this training, we suggest you reach out to your local department, or sign a volunteer firefighter agreement with the local fire department at the CFRC campus (Fire Rescue International).
The Canadian Fire Rescue College is a Canadian Red Cross Training Partner, and offers this program through the Red Cross. This training program is currently approved by the British Columbia Emergency Medical Association Licensing Board, and the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics (SCoP). The SCoP is a participating member of the Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators (COPR) standardized entry to practice examination process which can make applying for labour mobility registration in other provinces easier. Students who would like to register as a licensed EMR with the Alberta College of Paramedics will be required to have registered in another province first and then apply for Labour Mobility registration.
When you attend the practical component, you will be given the opportunity to stay overnight at the local fire stations. While there is no fee for this living arrangement, expect to not be staying at the Ritz! Students who demand a more luxurious living arrangement will have to seek it out at their own expense.
If you so choose, you may sign up with the local Fire Department and respond to emergency callouts under their officer's supervision. Our college works closely with this department, and trains most of its staff, so they are pretty familiar with our expectations.
If you're scared of responding to calls, don't worry! This is completely optional and won't negatively affect your education or certification.
The EMR practical component does have set dates that students must apply before, and select dates they must attend our campus on. Students must pick one scheduled class to attend from the list below:
