Responding to hazardous materials incidents requires specialized training, disciplined procedures, and a clear understanding of risk, safety, and regulatory standards. The NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations Training Program at Canadian Fire Rescue College is designed to prepare responders to safely identify, assess, and mitigate hazardous materials incidents within their operational scope.
This industry-aligned program delivers NFPA 470–compliant Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations training, equipping students with the knowledge and practical skills required to recognize hazardous substances, establish scene control, protect life and the environment, and operate effectively within an incident command structure. Training emphasizes responder safety, hazard recognition, defensive control strategies, and coordinated emergency response.
Delivered through a blended learning model, the program combines online theory with intensive on-campus practical training at our Red Deer County, Alberta campus. Students progress from foundational hazard awareness to applied operations-level response through hands-on instruction and realistic scenarios.
The Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations program is suitable for firefighters, emergency responders, and industrial personnel, as well as individuals seeking to enter the hazardous materials response field. This certification is widely required or preferred by fire departments, industrial employers, and emergency response organizations across Canada and the United States.
Explore the sections below to learn more about program structure, certifications, training delivery, and hands-on instruction.
