NFPA 1041 Emergency Services Instructor Training Program

Fire and Emergency Services Instruction and Training Development

Effective emergency services training depends on knowledgeable instructors who understand how to teach, evaluate, and lead learning in high-risk environments. The Emergency Services Instructor (ESI) Training Program at Canadian Fire Rescue College is designed to prepare firefighters and fire officers to instruct, develop, and supervise training within fire and emergency services organizations.

This industry-aligned program delivers NFPA 1041–compliant Emergency Services Instructor training, providing students with the instructional foundations required to deliver safe, effective, and standards-based training. Emphasis is placed on adult learning principles, instructional methods, student evaluation, lesson planning, and training program oversight within the fire and emergency response context.

Training is delivered through a blended learning model, combining online theory with in-person practical instruction at our Red Deer County, Alberta campus. Students apply instructional concepts in realistic training environments, developing the communication, leadership, and organizational skills required of emergency services instructors.

The Emergency Services Instructor Training Program is offered at two certification levels, typically completed separately depending on professional role and organizational needs. Instructor Level I prepares graduates to deliver fire and emergency services training, while Instructor Level II focuses on lesson plan development, curriculum oversight, and supervision of instructional delivery. This tiered structure allows candidates to pursue the level best aligned with their career progression.

This program is suitable for currently serving firefighters, individuals seeking promotion or instructional responsibilities, and those looking to strengthen their qualifications for leadership and training-focused roles within the fire service. Due to the specialized nature of instructor training, practical sessions may be scheduled using a wait list format to ensure adequate instructional capacity and training quality.

Explore the sections below to learn more about program structure, certification levels, training delivery, and practical scheduling.

Program Information

Students can begin the online course at any point in time, but the practical component does have set dates that students must apply before, and select dates they must attend our campus. This training is very specialized, and class sizes are typically quite small. Due to the specialized nature of this training, the CFRC provides a Wait List (WL) application option. Students must pick one scheduled class to attend from the list below:
