    Fire Officer Training Program

Get other people to kick in doors and save babies!

Is kicking in doors and saving babies just not quite enough for you? Maybe you're getting older and figure maybe someone else should start doing the door kicking and baby saving? If so, then this is the course for you! All jokes aside, this program is designed to prepare firefighters and fire officers to act in varios fire officer roles.

The Blended Fire Officer Training Program offered by the Canadian Fire Rescue College allows students to take the theory portion of their firefighter training online instead of in class (no more fighting to just stay awake in the back of the classroom as the instructor sentences you to death by PowerPoint). After students complete the online training, they attend in-person training at our campus in Red Deer County (Springbrook). Students get the opportunity to sign up with the local Fire Department, and put their skills to use while they undergo their formal training.

This training program is split into two levels that are typically taken separately depending on the needs of the end user. The level I portion of the program introduces the fire officer to the role and prepares them to manage a single fire company, and the level II portion of the program allows the graduate to manage multiple fire compenies, and handle more complex emergency situations. There are a few other components of the program, but these are the main differences that should be considered when deciding on which level will suit your needs best.

The Fire Officer Training Program can be taken by individuals who are currently employed as firefighters, by firefighters looking to receive a promotion or transfer, or by individuals looking to add to their resume so they can apply for career firefighter positions. Due to the highly specialized nature of this training, the college provides a Wait List (WL) practical schedule option that allows additional practical schedules to be added as the WL increases in size.

Some departments require this training before a firefighter may be eligible for further promotion.

When you attend the practical component, you will be given the opportunity to stay overnight at the college dormitories. While there is no fee for this living arrangement, expect to not be staying at the Ritz! Students who demand a more luxurious living arrangement will have to seek it out at their own expense. The dormitories feature private rooms, with shared washroom and kitchen facilities.

Students can begin the online course at any point in time, but the practical component does have set dates that students must apply before, and select dates they must attend our campus. This training is very specialized, and class sizes are typically quite small. Due to the specialized nature of this training, the CFRC provides a Wait List (WL) application option. New practical schedules will be booked based on the availability of instructors, and the size of the WL group. Students must pick one scheduled class to attend from the list below:

    OFFICER LEVEL I:

    Class 253ESO1: Weekends

    • Application Deadline: July 30, 2025
    • First Day of in-person Classes: August 30, 2025

Applicants who select "WL" will be added to a Wait List and will be contacted when the waitlist generates enough students to run another practical component. The Admissions Team will reach out via email to schedule dates and times that work best for most (ideally all) students on the waitlist. Note* There is no guarantee that the WL course will suit the applicants schedule, or run during the period preferred by the student. The CFRC schedules one practical component for each level, each season not including WL designated courses.

All in-person training is hosted at our Red Deer campus located at 3420 22 Street, Springbrook.

The CFRC Breaks down pricing for the Fire Officer Training Program into a few different payment plan options so students don't have to pay a large sum all at once. Students will be given the opportunity to apply for a payment plan as part of their program application.
