Fire officers play a critical role in leading personnel, managing operations, and making high-consequence decisions in dynamic emergency environments. The Fire Officer Level I & II Training Program at Canadian Fire Rescue College is designed to prepare firefighters and fire officers to assume supervisory and leadership roles in accordance with nationally recognized standards.
This industry-aligned program delivers NFPA 1021–compliant Fire Officer training, providing students with the knowledge and skills required to lead fire companies, manage personnel, and oversee emergency operations. Instruction emphasizes leadership principles, communication, risk management, incident command, and operational decision-making within the fire service context.
Training is delivered through a blended learning model that combines online theory with in-person practical instruction at our Red Deer County, Alberta campus. This approach allows students to build a strong theoretical foundation while applying leadership concepts through scenario-based training and practical exercises.
The Fire Officer Training Program is offered at two certification levels, typically completed separately depending on career stage and organizational requirements. Fire Officer Level I focuses on supervising and managing a single fire company, while Fire Officer Level II expands on these competencies to include leadership of multiple companies and management of more complex emergency incidents. This tiered structure allows candidates to pursue the level most appropriate for their professional development.
This program is suitable for currently serving firefighters, individuals seeking promotion or leadership responsibilities, and those looking to strengthen their qualifications for supervisory roles within the fire service. Due to the specialized nature of officer training, practical sessions may be scheduled using a wait list format to ensure appropriate instructional resources and training quality.
Explore the sections below to learn more about program structure, certification levels, training delivery, and practical scheduling.

Students can begin the online course at any point in time, but the practical component does have set dates that students must apply before, and select dates they must attend our campus. This training is very specialized, and class sizes are typically quite small. Due to the specialized nature of this training, the CFRC provides a Wait List (WL) application option. New practical schedules will be booked based on the availability of instructors, and the size of the WL group. Students must pick one scheduled class to attend from the list below:

The Admissions Team will reach out via email to schedule dates and times that work best for most (ideally all) students on the waitlist. Note* There is no guarantee that the WL course will suit the applicants schedule, or run during the period preferred by the student. The CFRC schedules one practical component for each level, each season not including WL designated courses.
All in-person training is hosted at our Red Deer campus located at 3420 22 Street, Springbrook.
