NFPA 1140 Wildland Firefighter Level I & BCWS S-100 / S-185

Wildland and Wildland-Urban Interface Firefighting Training

Wildland firefighting requires specialized training, physical endurance, and a strong understanding of fire behaviour, terrain, and safety protocols. The Wildland Firefighter Training Program at Canadian Fire Rescue College is designed to prepare individuals to safely and effectively respond to wildfires, with particular emphasis on operations in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) where natural vegetation and developed areas intersect.

This program offers two recognized training pathways: NFPA 1140 Wildland Firefighter Level I, and BC Wildfire Service S-100 and S-185 Basic Fire Suppression and Fire Line Safety. Both options provide foundational wildland firefighting knowledge and practical skills focused on fire behaviour, suppression techniques, line construction, tool use, situational awareness, and firefighter safety.

Training is delivered through a blended learning model for applicable courses, combining online theory with hands-on, in-person instruction at our Red Deer County, Alberta campus. Practical training emphasizes field-based skills and real-world application to prepare students for the physical and operational demands of wildland fire response.

Please note: BC Wildfire Service S-100 training is delivered in an in-class and field-based format only and is not offered as a blended program.

The Wildland Firefighter Training Program is suitable for current firefighters, individuals seeking to enter the wildland firefighting profession, and those looking to strengthen their qualifications for seasonal or contract wildfire response roles. While many provinces operate their own agency-specific training programs, this course provides valuable foundational knowledge and recognized certification that supports recruitment and readiness across jurisdictions.

Students may choose to complete either training pathway or both, depending on career goals and regional requirements.

Explore the sections below to learn more about course options, certifications, training delivery, and hands-on instruction.
