NFPA 1140 Wildland Firefighter I & BCWS S-100 Training

Integrated Wildland and Wildland-Urban Interface Firefighting Training

Wildland firefighting requires specialized training, physical endurance, situational awareness, and a strong understanding of fire behaviour, terrain, suppression tactics, and responder safety. The Wildland Firefighter Training Program at Canadian Fire Rescue College prepares students to respond safely and effectively to wildfires and wildland-urban interface incidents.

Students registering for available 2026 courses may complete NFPA 1140 Wildland Firefighter I or BC Wildfire Service S-100 training through the separately scheduled course options listed below.

Beginning in 2027, these pathways will be combined into one dual certification program that includes both NFPA 1140 Wildland Firefighter I and BCWS S-100 Basic Fire Suppression and Safety. The updated 2027 S-100 curriculum incorporates the content previously delivered separately through S-185 Fire Entrapment Avoidance and Safety.

The combined program develops foundational knowledge and practical skills in wildland fire behaviour, firefighter safety, fire-line construction, hand-tool use, water delivery, suppression tactics, entrapment avoidance, situational awareness, and coordinated emergency response.

Training is delivered through a blended learning model that combines online theory for the NFPA 1140 component with three days of intensive, field-based instruction at our Red Deer County, Alberta campus. Students then complete a separate final testing and evaluation day.

The program is suitable for current firefighters, aspiring wildland firefighters, industrial emergency responders, seasonal wildfire personnel, and individuals seeking to strengthen their qualifications for municipal, regional, contract, or provincial wildfire response opportunities.

Explore the sections below to learn more about the combined program, 2026 and 2027 course schedules, certifications, admission requirements, tuition, delivery method, and hands-on instruction.

Program Information

Combined Wildland Firefighter Training

Beginning in 2027, CFRC’s Wildland Firefighter Training Program includes both:

  • NFPA 1140 Wildland Firefighter I, formerly addressed through NFPA 1051
  • BCWS S-100 Basic Fire Suppression and Safety, including the content previously delivered through S-185 Fire Entrapment Avoidance and Safety

Students no longer need to register for the NFPA 1140 and BCWS S-100 components separately. Both are included within one integrated Wildland Firefighter course.

The NFPA 1140 component prepares students to function safely as members of a wildland fire suppression crew under direct supervision. It develops the knowledge and practical abilities required to recognize wildland fire conditions, use tools and equipment, construct control lines, support suppression operations, and work within an incident management structure.

The BCWS S-100 component provides the foundational training required for safe wildfire suppression in British Columbia. It combines classroom instruction with field-based practical training and includes fire entrapment avoidance and safety content.

Program topics may include:

  • Wildland and wildland-urban interface fire behaviour
  • Fuel types and factors affecting fire spread
  • Weather, terrain, and topography
  • Firefighter safety and situational awareness
  • Entrapment avoidance and emergency procedures
  • Wildland personal protective equipment
  • Hand tools and equipment
  • Portable pumps, hose, and water delivery
  • Fire-line construction
  • Direct, indirect, and parallel attack methods
  • Mop-up and patrol operations
  • Crew organization and incident command
  • Communications and accountability
  • Structure and exposure considerations in the wildland-urban interface
  • Practical wildfire suppression scenarios

The combined course includes three days of instruction and practical training followed by one separate day of final testing and evaluation.

Students can begin online training (NFPA 1140 only - no online component for S100) at any point in time, but the practical component does have set dates that students must apply before, and select dates they must attend our campus on.

All in-person training is hosted at our Red Deer campus located at 3420 22 Street, Springbrook.

Students must pick one scheduled class to attend from the list below:
